Movie Star: They Always Say They're Single

When it comes to early-2000s nostalgia, you can keep the low-rise jeans. I’d much rather partake in Jessica Simpson’s short, sweet, yet thought-provoking essay about the Hollywood dating scene. I felt like I was dishing with a girlfriend, getting the real story with all the grace, humor, and perspective of someone who’s made it through to the other side.
When Jessica finds herself newly single and more famous than ever, she decides to have some fun defying other people’s expectations for once. As she tries to figure out what she really wants from a relationship, the Movie Star stands out in a sea of boybanders and rom-com poster boys—not only because of her teenage crush on him, but because of his authentic confidence. He gets to know her friends, she hears a lot about his spiritual advisor (I know!), and then comes the swoon moment: A trip to the set of his latest movie on his private jet? Yes, please. But when reality falls short of the promise, Jessica has to summon her courage and self-worth to walk out with her pride intact.
I’m still thinking about how defying expectations isn’t much different from trying desperately to live up to them: you’re still focused on other people’s opinions. In the end, your opinion of yourself is what matters. This story was a welcome reminder to make sure I’m doing things for the right reasons. So don’t expect to see me in low-rise jeans anytime soon.
