Now it is outright war, for Captain Roberts anyway. Now he is both a pirate and a rebel with people on both sides of the border who either love him or hate him. After fighting a duel with one of the Alliance's promising new captains, torturing him, and leaving him for dead; he has made powerful enemies in the Alliance hegemony. After freeing a freighter crew and its captain, he discovers that the Alliance has a cache of treasure in a nearby system that is soon to be picked up, and transported back to the Alliance core worlds. Nathaniel wants that treasure, and he needs to get there first. The Alliance no longer wants Nathaniel and his crew captured and enslaved. Now they want him dead, and have put a price on his head to make sure it happens. This new Bounty was issued before the Alliance even realized that they have been robbed.

He will also have to defeat slavers, who have taken an interest in his small fleet. Persephone, his ships AI is more than she thought. She may even be a goddess. Nathaniel has also undergone some changes after visiting a system populated with cyborgs. He questions what he has become; is he human, or machine. The Gods have taken an interest in him, and are watching him carefully, while he quests for the star bridge.
