Local legend has it there are things hidden deep within the Appalachian Mountains that should never be disturbed. When excavation at a coal mine unearths more than a new seam of coal, the residents of a nearby town find out just how true the legend is when they come face to face with the Thing in the mine.

A young Texan named Jack Saylor enlists tin the Confederate Army to help fight for the Cause. But he soon realizes that Army service was not the adventurous experience he had envisioned it to be. He meets a beautiful young nurse who quickly captures his heart. As the strain of war rages on, Jack begins to wonder if everything he is attempting to accomplish in his life is nothing but a lost cause.
