Jules Verne

Fiction / Science Fiction / Fantasy

Jules Verne (1828-1905) is one of the most recognizable names in Western literature, coming to be known as one of the Fathers of Science-Fiction. Although he studied to be a lawyer and held stock trading jobs, he quickly learned that he had a knack for weaving adventurous stories of travels and expeditions. It didn’t hurt that one of his teachers may have been inventor Brutus de Villeroi, who created the first submarine for the U.S. Navy. Verne wrote about air travel and space travel 50 years before either was possible.

Rafferty & Llewellyn Cozy Mystery 01 - Dead Before Morning (v5.0)

Rafferty & Llewellyn Cozy Mystery 01 - Dead Before Morning (v5.0)

Geraldine Evans

Mystery & Thrillers / Historical Fiction / Nonfiction

Book DescriptionFor readers who like cozy mysteries, humorous mysteries and police procedurals.**With his superstitious Irish nature, British Detective Joe Rafferty isn't surprised that his first murder case as a newly-promoted Essex detective is a tough one. The murder victim, whom the media has dubbed 'The Faceless Lady', has no ID and has been bludgeoned beyond recognition. She also supposedly had no access to the secure psychiatric facility where her dead body is found. The news media has seized on the case, placing Rafferty in an unwelcome spotlight. His boss, with whom he shares a mutual loathing, would love to see him fail. And these are not his only little difficulties. Because Detective Rafferty is cursed by a malign fate and with a large family who believe obeying the Law of the Land is optional, Rafferty capitulates to his ma's demand that he does whatever it takes to get his crooked distant cousin out of the pokey in time for his marriage to ma's niece. Successfully accomplishing this sticky manoeuvre is sure to be challenging, but keeping it upwind of his morally stiff new partner might be a demand too far.If Rafferty can't spring his cousin in time, his ma's liable to commit murder--his. And if the Faceless Lady's case remains unsolved, theSuperintendent will black-mark his record so indelibly that his career as a detective will never recover. If he still has a career left to ruin. Their first big case together, the mutilation murder of a young woman in an expensive mental hospital, tests both their ability and their compatibility: they risk unpleasant retribution from the clinic's ambitious, womanizing owner as well as scrutiny by press and superiors. Solid police procedure set in an isolated area but fraught with conflict. For most collections.Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.From Kirkus ReviewsThe debut of marriage-phobic Detective Inspector Joseph Rafferty and his well-educated, lonely subordinate, Sergeant Llewellyn, who are called to the grounds of a posh private psychiatric hospital to survey the naked body of a young woman with her face bashed in. Who coshed her, and why? The philandering, social-climbing hospital-director, Dr. Melville-Briggs, his proud, do-gooder wife, his mistresses, and his staff all claim airtight alibis--which Rafferty and Llewellyn soon see right through, thanks to the smarmy hospital porter, the folks at the pub, and the tendency of major characters to spread malicious gossip about each other. Then a worried young woman named Miranda insists that she was meant to be the victim because of her firsthand knowledge of Melville-Briggs's drug-trafficking; Melville-Briggs himself dies in a suspicious car accident; and a diary with some heavy-duty S/M entries pops up before the villain is confronted--almost. Unpleasant people behaving in preposterous ways, with the author showing little insight into the medical profession or police procedure. A sequel, alas, is in the works.Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
